About Us

HH Livestock is owned and operated by Heather Haydock, her partner Greg Lovell and children Shelby, Seaton and Kendall. The ranch is located in the flat to rolling prairie hills of northeastern Alberta, Canada near the town of Elk Point, Alberta.

Heather was raised near Lloydminster, SK on a grain and cattle farm. She is a 4th generation farmer whose paternal grandfather Byron Haydock registered his first Purebred Shorthorn cattle in the 1940s.

Heather spent her youth showing cattle at Junior Shorthorn shows, purebred cattle shows (Stockade Round-up, Agribition, etc). She spent 10 years in the Hillmond 4-H Beef Club where she had great success both in and outside the show ring. She traveled to Canadian Western Agribition as a member of the Saskatchewan 4-H judging team, was a SK delegate at the National 4-H Conference in Toronto, ON and participated in a 4-H exchange with a club in Illinois, USA.

Heather attended the University of Saskatchewan where she graduated in 2006 with a BSA majoring in Animal Science and minoring in Rangeland Management. Upon completing University, she worked at a feedlot in east central Alberta for several months before flying to New Zealand as an IAEA Trainee. In New Zealand, Heather worked on a 570 head dairy farm for 6
months. Heather spent her free time traveling around New Zealand viewing many Shorthorn herds of cattle but more importantly soaking up Agriculture in another country. Heather boarded another plane in early May of 2007 and headed to a cattle stud in Australia to complete her IAEA training.

Heather got the opportunity to work for Gobongo Cattle Co., a purebred Charolais, Charbray and Mandalong Special cattle stud. Heather was put in charge of the show preparation and breaking in of all the show cattle. Gobongo would exhibit between 20 to 30 head and most of them were 12 to 24 month old bulls at the shows. Heather found time to break in a string of heifer calves for the Charolais Youth Muster at Warwick QLD. The string of heifers impressed many onlookers and the breeders received many compliments on their heifer calves as a result of Heather’s efforts.

Heather had many jobs besides the show cattle, whether it was shifting cattle on motorbike from paddock to paddock, checking water wells in various paddocks, mustering sale bulls for photos, semen testing and clipping. Heather did get some free time, where she traveled to view herds of Shorthorn cattle in Australia and attend the National Shorthorn Bull Sale in Dubbo NSW.

Heather returned home in October of 2007 with a deeper appreciation for agriculture and knowledge gained the hard way. Most of all she was able to work with many different breeds of beef and dairy cattle that she wouldn’t have if not being an IAEA Trainee. Heather was employed with Federated Co-op upon returning home. She spent a year with them before she shifted to Lakeland Co-op in Bonnyville, AB. In 2010, Heather moved to the Elk Point, AB area with her little herd of shorthorn and shorthorn cross cows. It was those cows thaformed the nucleus of HH Livestock and Heather’s passion for Shorthorn cattle was ignited once again.

Today, HH livestock herd has grown from 2 purebred cows to almost 50 Purebred shorthorn cows. Heather has bought females from many breeders in Canada including Muridale Shorthorns, Matlock Stock Farm, Crooked Post Shorthorns. The biggest group of females Heather has purchased has come from Y Lazy Y shorthorns in Corvallis, MO USA. The diverse range of bloodlines found in the HH herd presently makes it unique and a great outcross for many purebred breeders.

Heather’s goal now that the herd is very close to the 50 cows, is to maintain quality not quantity. Heather is concentrating on linebreeding the very best of her cows to stack up great genetics in order to created consistency for generations to come.
